Makani Golf Club Welcomes Rhett Colbrese, Director of Golf
Welcome to the Director of Golf Rhett Colbrese who joined Makani Golf Club in October 2022
Rhett learned to play golf in San Diego, California. Competing with the best juniors in the country, he quickly sought out premier golf instruction. Mentored under the great Carl Welty (Jim Mclean’s coach and mentor) Rhett began to study what the best players in the world do the same.
With the fascination of swing mechanics and what makes a great player, he began to expand his education with the golf swing. After college, Rhett played professionally (PGA Tour Canada, PGA Tour Latin America). During this time, he began working with swing instructor Sean Foley (former coach to Tiger Woods). This step allowed him to begin learning technical data on trackman. As speed became a new fundamental of the game, Dana Dahlquist was a key mentor.
Post professional golf, Rhett began caddying (PGA Tour, LPGA Tour, Korn Ferry Tour). This was the final piece to understanding how to develop a player. Course management, shot probability, and the psychological approach were invaluable lessons.
A driving force to Rhett’s move to Big Island is to generate elite junior golf. The opportunity for young people to use golf as a way to elevate their education through scholarships is something that he is very passionate about and currently under-utilized.
