• Malama Kailua Pier & Bay Community Open House: July 28

    The public is invited to join the Kailua Bay Advisory Working Group (KBAWG) for an “open house” on the Kailua Pier on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, from 3:00 pm to 5:30 pm.  As we value community input, we welcome everyone to be a part of the process to improve Kailua Bay & Pier and inform future stewardship.

    KBAWG is administered by the Department of Land and Natural Resources following the recommendations made by House Concurrent Resolution 191 from 2025, and includes representation from local businesses, cultural practitioners, and community organizations in collaboration with state and county government.  Part of KBAWG’s Vision Statement: Rooted in shared understanding, education, and mālama ‘āina, Kailua Bay stands as a living expression of collective stewardship, cultural continuity, and sustainable prosperity for present and future generations.
     
    Event Highlights:
     
    ‘Ohana Water Activities: Outrigger canoe rides with Kona Boys & local canoe clubs, as well as guided snorkel tours with Jack’s Diving Locker will be offered free of charge on a first-come, first-served basis, with limited slots available (approximately 20 minutes each session).  Signups will be handled onsite at the event.  Please be aware that these activities will be offered so long as weather conditions permit and may be cancelled in the event of inclement weather.
     
    ‘Ike Kupuna Talk Story: Learn the cultural history of Kailua Bay and Niumalu.
     
    Pier & Bay Improvement Proposals: Learn about KBAWG’s vision to support infrastructure improvements on Kailua Pier and to mālama the Bay.
     
    Ho’onanea & Share Your Mana’o: Bring your ‘ohana to build connections to the Bay and share in our collective kuleana to this ‘āina.
     
    Event Parking Information:
    Complimentary parking validation is available for up to two hours at the King Kamehameha Kona Beach Resort for Community Open House participants.  To receive parking validation:

    1. Park at the King Kamehameha Kona Beach Resort.
    2. Attend the Kailua Bay Community Open House at Kailua Pier.
    3. Participate in at least two activities (visit exhibits, provide feedback, attend a presentation, or join a hands-on activity).
    4. Present your parking ticket at the event’s Welcome table to receive validation before returning to your vehicle.
