• Lead for Hawai'i's 2022 Fellowship Cohort Opportunities

    March 31, 2022

The deadline to apply for our fellowship program is April 15th.

Lead for Hawaiʻi (LFHI) is a place-based fellowship focused on leadership development and capacity building. We recruit, train, and retain Hawaiʻi’s most dynamic young leaders to address critical needs in their hometown, and activate the leadership we need to revitalize our communities. LFHI Fellows serve as AmeriCorps Service Members and are part of LFA's national movement of change-makers. They attend the annual Summer Institute, build an intimate network of locally-rooted leaders, engage in the wide breadth of LFA programming across core pillars, and add critical capacity to organizations.

We are currently recruiting for 4 Fellows to serve in local government and community organizations within Hawaiʻi County. I’m reaching out to ask for your help to spread the word about our program and connect us with recent grads and young professionals who might be a good fit. 2022 LFHI fellowship positions:

Hilo, Hawai'i - Public Health Fellow with the Hawaiʻi State Department of Health
The LFHI Fellow will be working directly in support of COVID-19 operations primarily in the support of assessing issues of equity in COVID-19 vaccine roll-out in underserved populations. Overlaps into other aspects of the pandemic response will be at the forefront, including other equity aspects related to outreach, testing, and medical access. Over the course of the fellowship, the individual will help to support the growing Office of Equity at DOH by collecting relevant information, performing basic collection and analysis of both quantitative and qualitative data sources, and informing our collective efforts in this sector.

Hilo, Hawaiʻi - Kīlauea Recovery Community Resilience Fellow with the County of Hawaiʻi
The Fellow will support the County of Hawaiʻi in its efforts to coordinate recovery from the 2018 Kīlauea eruption, in alignment with both near-term and long-term goals of the Kīlauea Recovery and Resilience Plan. The Fellow will help evaluate, develop, and facilitate projects and efforts that continue to provide relief to residents and businesses impacted by the eruption in the Puna District to achieve its near-term goals. They will also work to evaluate, develop, and implement strategies and projects that protect public health and safety, enhance community well-being, and help create a resilient economy islandwide. The Fellow will focus their efforts on the impact of land-use decisions on the community, working with community members to build relationships and identify long-term goals.

Hilo or Kailua Kona, Hawaiʻi - Comprehensive ʻĀina Planning Fellow with the County of Hawaiʻi
Recognizing that land use is foundational to the impact of our community’s well-being, the Fellow will play a critical role in the comprehensive review and update to the County of Hawai‘i’s General Plan. The General Plan is the blueprint that guides the long-term development of Hawai‘i Island. It considers the needs of the entire island and provides a sound growth strategy that directs future opportunities related to land use, zoning amendments, and capital expenditures. The Fellow will provide capacity to expand the comprehensive review to include strategies that focus on: adaptation to climate change; an increase in affordable housing; and equitable development through inclusive policies that are reflective of the community.

Kailua Kona, Hawaiʻi - Broadband Strategy Fellow with the County of Hawaiʻi
The Fellow will serve under the County of Hawaiʻi's Research and Development Department to lead the implementation of the Hawaii Broadband Strategic Plan, as relevant to Hawaiʻi County. The Fellow will work with partner agencies, such as telecommunication entities, state and county departments, and the Statewide Broadband Hui to expand broadband infrastructure, collect data and create a plan to strengthen digital equity and inclusion and promote digital literacy initiatives. The Fellow will ensure an accurate roadmap is created to continue their expansion and inclusion initiatives beyond the term of their fellowship.
