You’re invited to join The Kohala Center at one or both of their September Hoa‘āina Stewardship Days! These half-day stewardship opportunities are designed for community members to meet each other and deepen their pilina (relationship) with ‘āina as a hui (collective). Our cherished ‘ili ‘āina (traditional land divisions within an ahupuaʻa) at Keawewai on Kohala Mountain and Niuli‘i in North Kohala guide us to foster the knowledge, values, and skills needed to care for places that care for us in many ways.
Keawewai
Wednesday, September 16
9 a.m.–2 p.m.
Located along Kohala Mountain Road about 15 minutes from central Waimea, Keawewai is home to our Kilohana Native Tree Nursery and 11 native forest restoration plots across riparian corridors, erosion-prone slopes, former pasture, and high-wind areas. We have collected seed, propagated, and outplanted more than 5,000 native plants throughout Keawewai and adjacent restoration areas, (re)creating the foundation for a resilient native forest and biodiverse food forest.

Niuli‘i
Thursday, September 24
9 a.m.–2 p.m.
In North Kohala near Kēōkea Beach Park, Niuli‘i is home to a magnificent hala grove and holds great potential to grow and produce food for community once again. Our stewardship efforts focus on strengthening the health of the existing coastal hala forest while advancing community-led planning for expanded food production and agroforestry.

September's hana:
With the substantial amounts of rain and wind Kohala has received in the past month, our hana this month will focus on…weeding and cleanup! Non-native grasses and vines compromise the health and well-being of our native trees and shrubs, so we’ll work together to give our beloved hoa lā‘au (plant friends) space to breathe, grow, and thrive.
We provide the tools and drinking water needed for each day’s hana. We’ll gather for lunch around noon so please bring your lunch, reusable beverage container, and any snacks you’d like to have on hand.
