• Japanese Cultural Center of Kona Hosting Sakura Kokumai, First and Only Female Karate Olympian, at Free Community Event

    The Japanese Cultural Center of Kona is hosting a special celebration featuring Sakura Kokumai, the first and only female karate Olympian. This free public event invites families, students, and martial arts enthusiasts to experience an inspiring morning of culture, athleticism, and connection.

    The event takes place on February 28 from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM, with doors opening at 9:00 AM, at the Colonel Ellison S. Onizuka Gymnasium at Konawaena High School.

    Guests will be treated to a live kata performance by Sakura Kokumai, showcasing the precision, discipline, and artistry that brought her to the Olympic stage. The program also includes local martial arts demonstrations, offering a look at the strength and diversity of Hawai‘i’s own martial arts community.

    Attendees will have the chance to meet Kokumai during a photo and autograph session, and limited-edition merchandise will be available for purchase.
