Luana Hospitality Group announced the Huggo & Shirley von Platen Luder Scholarship Program, a community-focused initiative honoring the legacy of the couple who founded Huggo’s in 1969. Building on decades of kamaʻaina-owned, ʻohana-operated service, the program expands the group’s commitment to supporting local students and teachers across Hawaiʻi.
About the scholarship
In 1969, Huggo & Shirley opened Huggo’s on the Kailua-Kona shoreline. Since then, their son Eric and his partner, Scott Dodd, have expanded their kama’aina-owned and ‘ohana operated businesses. It is their desire to malama the communities that support us throughout the year. As a result, they will be awarding 2 annual scholarships, & sponsor up to 40 classroom projects* this year to help pass on the Aloha to local communities.
Who can apply for the scholarship?
High school seniors who will be continuing higher education/training at one of the listed high schools.
Completed applications must be submitted by February 28th, 2026
How will the funds be distributed?
• $1,000 Hawaii Island High School
• $1,000 Kaua’i Island High School
• $10,000 Big Island & Kaua’i Public Schools
Who is eligible to apply for a classroom project?
Teachers of any grade level at local public schools in the districts of Kona, Kohala, and Kapa’a. The maximum amount awarded will be $250 per project. *One project per teacher.
