• Aloha Theatre Announces Open Auditions for Nunsense September 21 - 23, 2026

    September 14, 2026

Kainaliu, Hawaii — Aloha Theatre is pleased to announce open auditions for Nunsense, the beloved musical comedy about five nuns from the Little Sisters of Hoboken who find themselves in an unexpected predicament—and turn to the stage to solve it.

When the sisters discover that their cook has accidentally poisoned 52 of their fellow nuns, they must quickly put on a variety show to raise money for the burials. What follows is a delightfully chaotic evening filled with songs, dances, comedy, and plenty of nun-inspired antics.

Auditions are open to performers interested in joining this energetic and hilarious production. Auditioners must wear closed-toed, comfortable shoes and clothing they can move in.

All auditions and callbacks will be held at Aloha Theatre.  Please arrive early and prepared to your best ability.

    ROLES AVAILABLE

Sister Mary Regina — Mother Superior

The head of the Little Sisters of Hoboken, Mary Regina is respected by the other nuns and determined to maintain order—but the chaos of the convent frequently gets the better of her. She is feisty, quick-witted, and outrageous, with a flair for the spotlight and a talent for physical comedy. Although she tries to project authority and strictness, her “bark is worse than her bite,” and her extroverted, mischievous side is never far beneath the surface. A strong comic actor with excellent timing is essential. May be played with an Irish accent.
    Vocal: Mezzo/Alto belter; jazz/swing style
    Dance: Musical theatre; light dance

Sister Mary Hubert — Mistress of Novices

In charge of training the convent’s novices, Mary Hubert is kind, maternal, and endlessly diplomatic—at least when circumstances allow. She considers herself more than qualified to be Mother Superior and is in constant, good-natured competition with Mary Regina. Beneath her dignified exterior is a woman who loves to let loose, and she needs only the slightest encouragement to kick up her heels. Warm, funny, and grounded, she serves as both a voice of reason and a willing participant in the convent’s antics.
Vocal: Mezzo/Alto belter; gospel style a plus
    Dance: Musical theatre; tap

    Sister Robert Anne

A former child delinquent turned streetwise nun, Robert Anne is tough, irreverent, and completely unafraid to challenge authority. A natural jokester and constant source of aggravation for Mother Superior, she has a rough-around-the-edges charm and a heart of gold. She connects easily with young people because she speaks their language and has little interest in convent decorum. Her lack of refinement is part of her appeal, and she brings a bold, energetic comic presence to the group. A strong Brooklyn accent is part of the character.
Vocal: Mezzo/Alto belter; show-belt and ballad style
    Dance: Musical theatre; light dance/tap

    Sister Mary Amnesia

Sweet, spacey, and gloriously unpredictable, Mary Amnesia has lost her memory and cannot remember anything about her past—except that she is a nun. After a crucifix fell on her head, she was left with a childlike innocence and an endearing inability to make sense of the world around her. Her innocent nature frequently leads to wonderfully inappropriate or unexpected behavior, making her one of the convent’s most delightfully eccentric characters. She also has a puppet alter ego, Sister Mary Annette. Puppetry or ventriloquism experience is a plus, but not required.
Vocal: High soprano/belter; Broadway, classical, and country styles
    Dance: Musical theatre; light dance/tap

    Sister Mary Leo

A former professional dancer and the convent’s newest novice, Mary Leo has entered religious life with one very specific dream: to become the first ballerina nun. Still adjusting to giving up her “civilian” life, she is enthusiastic, impressionable, and completely convinced of her own considerable talents as a ballerina. She eagerly takes every opportunity to demonstrate her dancing and is easily persuaded to join the other sisters in mischief. Beneath her youthful confidence is someone still figuring out where she belongs, giving the character both comic energy and heart.
    Vocal: Soprano/mezzo
Dance: Ballet, pointe where possible, tap, and musical theatre
