• Aloha Shirt Festival and Fashion Week Hawai‘i Returns To Kailua-Kona

    September 19, 2023
Sustaining Hawai‘i’s Wearable Arts and Environment

Na‘alehu Theatre announces the 2nd annual Aloha Shirt Festival and Fashion Week Hawai‘i returning to the Outrigger Kona Resort and Spa from Thursday, September 28th (exhibit opens), Friday, Sept 29th and Saturday, Sept 30th 2023.

The Aloha Shirt Festival is a venture in hospitality bringing both traditional and contemporary wearable arts together to share a moment in time celebrating Hawai‘i’s contributions to the fashion industry.

Embracing local culture is what travel is all about. This exhibition reflects one of the most cherished traditions in Hawai‘i and the public is invited to celebrate the event by “getting into it”. Prizes given for many of the best Street Looks, so don your oldest, most colorful, or traditional and fit right in as you stand right out. You are immediately emerged in the Aloha Spirit.

Aloha shirts are an authentic way to share our local culture without concerns like cultural appropriation. Aloha shirts are an inclusive garment that locals and tourists can both enjoy. Visitors can get to know local designers and start building their wardrobe of authentic or even vintage aloha shirts to take a slice of island life back home with them.

The event will offer vintage ‘aloha wear’ exhibits, sales and appraisals, music and entertainment stars and celebrity appearances, exciting fashion runway shows featuring vintage and repurposed clothing, showcases of local designers, fashion collections and wearable art designs, traditional artisan and cutting-edge workshops, pop-ups, presentations, lei competition, hair and make-up shows, silent auction, tasty local and vintage food and beverage, and manta watching!

“Fashion Week Hawai‘i seeks to share knowledge of Hawai‘i’s traditions, connection to and the desire to preserve, embrace and protect the environment. By bringing together global resources and environmental and cultural campaigns we can strive to make the local industry more sustainable”, stated Chelle Pahinui, Executive Director of Na‘alehu Theatre.

“The Aloha Shirt Festival strives to influence global resort wear trends for the current and upcoming fashion seasons”, stated Fashion Week Director, Swan Elliott, Director of Focus International Hawai‘i, Model & Talent Agency. “Recognizing the overwhelming inspiration Hawai‘i provides, we welcome others who are also stirred by the beauty, culture, environment, and the “Spirit of Aloha” to attend this event.  We will be celebrating Jams World 60th Anniversary, Hula Kumu Micah Kamohoalii will be presenting his Dezigns by Kamohoalii collection with a live performance by Makana, many other designers Pomachina Designs, Smart Swimsuits, Hula Jula, Kapena Surf Boards, Kiholo Kai many more..

Kauila Kawelo Barber, one of the most creative and globally recognized stylists from Hawai'i is designing the Vintage on the Runway show that tells the story of immigration to Hawai'i and the various entities that have influenced the evolution of Hawai'i's fashion industry. The show will be iconic and a once in a lifetime presentation featuring Hawai'i's best models and talent and musical performances. The other brand being featured in the Vintage Exhibit is Jams World now celebrating 60 years in business in Hawai'i with 3 locations on Hawai'i Island. Another terrific story to tell!

Using both an in-person and digital platform the event will feature exclusive multimedia content with elements of the event available to both the public and trade audience globally to enable collaboration and bring together fashion, culture and technology.
