From Kailua-Kona:
(About a 35-minute drive)- Take Palani to Mamalahoa Hwy (190), head north toward Waimea.
- As you get closer to Mile Marker #22, you will see houses in the background ahead on a ridge and a very large puʻu (cinder cone) in the distance on your right.
- Get ready to slow down and turn RIGHT into the driveway with a solar powered recessed metal gate.
From Waimea, Waikoloa, or Hilo via Daniel K. Inouye Highway:- Stay on Highway 190 going south. You will see Puʻu Lani Ranch subdivision access on your left.
- Soon after passing Puʻu Lani, you will be traveling down a hill.
- Once at the bottom, be prepared to take the first LEFT into the driveway of Puʻu Waʻawaʻa access road with a solar powered recessed metal gate.
- Come through the gate, which should open automatically. If the gate does not open, get out and manually open it then close it behind you (livestock inside).
- Drive straight.
- It’s common to see livestock including: Black Angus cattle, feral sheep, and pigs along the road. Please go slow and be patient.
- You will approach a Y on the road with a brown signboard and a tiny green corrugated roof structure on the left.
- Stay to your RIGHT and drive approximately 2 miles up on the paved road.
- You will come to an overhead sign, “Puʻu Waʻawaʻa Ranch” over a cattle gap.
- Pass the Energy Lab, which will be on your left. Do NOT park by the Energy Lab, continue up the road to the first paved RIGHT turn.
- Head toward the LEFT side of the open pavilion.
- Park to the left of the pavilion, where there is an open grass area and not in the circle driveway.
- When leaving, use high beams and avoid livestock.
- At the gate, pull up to the stop line in the center of the road. The gate opens toward you.
- Be sure the gate closes once you exit, otherwise manually close it.
