• La`i`opua 2020 Offers Spring Food Preservation Workshops

    December 18, 2023
Kailua-Kona, Hawai`i (December 12, 2023) – Families interested in learning how to preserve foods through water bath and pressure canning are invited to register to attend one of three workshops being offered next spring by La`i`ōpua 2020.

These free food preservation workshops, funded through a grant from the County of Hawai`i, will be held at La`i`ōpua 2020 in February, March and April on two consecutive weekends each month. The workshops are being conducted by Keala Kahuanui, a member of the Polynesian Voyaging Society whose role during voyages is “cook;” she has years of experience in preparing foods for long voyages.

The workshops will instruct families on how to turn locally-sourced ingredients into meals for their pantries. Upon successful completion of a workshop, each `ohana will receive a canning kit which will allow them to continue the process in their own homes.

“This workshop series is a wonderful way for our island families to learn to be sustainable, using products grown on our island,” said Kawehi Inaba, Executive Director of La`i`ōpua 2020. “We are very fortunate to have an experienced food preservation expert to lead our workshops and we are so grateful to the County of Hawai`i for the funding to help strengthen our lahui and help them become food self-reliant.”
