Board Chair Message: West Hawai‘i on the Map!

Board Chair Message: West Hawai‘i on the Map!

Aloha Fellow Members,

I continue to be reminded that the Big Island’s West Hawai‘i is a vibrant community and much has been accomplished these last two years:

  • Return of international flights between Kona and Japan. And just recently, Japan Airlines makes a return of new daily, non-stop service to Kona after a seven-year hiatus. This is expected to bring an additional $10 million in annual tax revenue!
  • The State Judiciary broke ground on its largest project in West Hawai‘i to date—the $90 million Kona Judiciary Center in Kailua-Kona.
  • Celebration of our 10th anniversary with sister Chamber in Hatsukaichi, Japan.
  • Creation of the Poha Ka Lama Workforce Development Forum in partnership with Hawaii Community College at Palamanui, which resulted in a much-needed Workforce Needs Assessment.
  • Preservation of local control over water rights in the Keauhou aquifer.
  • Creation of a business hui of Chamber of Commerce statewide, professional organizations and community groups. Together, we have advocated for important policies that advance a positive business climate, such as the future of astronomy and STEM related endeavors.
  • Revitalization of the Kuleana Green Business Program and establishment of an annual Green Business Fair.

These accomplishments are only possible through the teamwork of the Kona-Kohala Chamber of Commerce and the many partners that sit alongside us to improve the West Hawai‘i business climate.

I would like to thank my fellow Board members, who volunteered their time, expertise and resources to further the mission of the Chamber. The last two years as the Board Chair have broadened my perspective on the opportunities and challenges of doing business in West Hawai‘i. One thing is clear; it definitely takes a village and I invite you to engage with the Chamber and continue to help make West Hawai‘i a great place to work, play and live.

Here are some upcoming opportunities:

Wed., June 21    June AfterHours at Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore. Network and learn what projects Habitat West Hawaii has coming up.

Fri., June 30       Annual Membership & Installation Luncheon with keynote speaker, Gov. David Ige at Four Seasons Resort Hualalai. We will also present the Pualu Awards and 2017 Small Business Awards and install our board for 2017-2018.

It has been an honor to serve as the Chair of the Chamber’s Board and I look forward to seeing you at our next event!

Aloha,
