Beginning in 2021, it will be illegal to sell sunscreens containing oxybenzone and/or octinoxate, two common chemicals found to be harmful to coral reef ecosystems, in the state of Hawaii. To understand the impact of this ban, we conducted beach-goer surveys at beaches adjacent to coral reefs on Oahu and Hawaii Island, to answer:
How aware are people of the effects of sunscreen chemicals on corals?
Where do people learn about this issue?
How prevalent are these chemicals in sunscreens used in Hawaii?
Are people willing to switch to reef-friendly options?
