Beginning in 2021, it will be illegal to sell sunscreens containing oxybenzone and/or octinoxate, two common chemicals found to be harmful to coral reef ecosystems, in the state of Hawaii. To understand the impact of this ban, we conducted beach-goer surveys at beaches adjacent to coral reefs on Oahu and Hawaii Island, to answer:
    • How aware are people of the effects of sunscreen chemicals on corals?
    • Where do people learn about this issue?
    • How prevalent are these chemicals in sunscreens used in Hawaii?
    • Are people willing to switch to reef-friendly options?
