Arts and Culture

Call it mystique, call it enchantment, call it simply a beautiful place. Whatever the description, there is definitely a sensory quality about the Big Island that strongly stirs the muse of the artist.

Economy

The economy of West Hawaii – like the State of Hawaii – is primarily driven by the visitor or tourism industry. With more than 6,000 hotel, resort and condominium rooms to fill, West Hawaii is host to more than a million visitors annually and this translates into a large number of jobs – about one in 10 – directly working for hotels and resorts.

Events and Activities

West Hawaii is home to an annual schedule of major monthly sporting, cultural, music, food and other events and festivals that draw thousands of participants and supporters from the local community as well as attract large numbers of off-island visitors.

Government

Government in Hawaii is composed of State Government, with its capital in Honolulu, and four County governments – the city and county of Honolulu and the counties of Kauai, Maui and the Big Island of Hawaii.

History

Although not at first evident to visitors and new residents, the Big Island has a fascinating natural and cultural history. Over the past 600 or so years West Hawaii in particular has been a focal point for numerous key events in the history of the State.

Natural Environment

The Big Island of Hawaii takes its name deservedly as it is twice the size of all the other Hawaiian Islands combined. Its 4,000-plus square miles make it larger than the state of Connecticut. It is the youngest Island in the Hawaiian chain and Ka Lae at the south tip is the southernmost point in the U.S.
