UH West Oahu Advisor Janet Duke will be on campus Wednesday, Nov 1, from 5:30 - 6:30 p.m.  She will be co-presenting with Carrie Kuwada Phipps at November's Degree Prep Workshop.  Janet will be highlighting all of the UHWO Distance Based Bachelor Degree Programs and Certificates from 5:30 - 6 p.m. and Carrie Kuwada Phipps will do an overview of all other Distance Based degrees (Bachelor, Master, Doctorate) available here through the University Center from 6 - 6:30 p.m.  Flyer and media release with more info attached below.  RSVP requested.

ASTRODAY IS COMING TO KONA COMMONS

 

Science and Astronomy Event on Saturday, November 4 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

AstroDay, an annual science and astronomy education event sponsored by the Maunakea Astronomy Outreach Committee (MKAOC), is coming to Kona Commons on Saturday, November 4 from11 a.m. to 4 p.m.This free, family-oriented, science celebration has been a tradition in Hilo for the past 16 years and will be in Kona for the first time.  AstroDay will be at the former Sports Authority space at Kona Commons located at 74-5450 Makala Blvd, Kailua-Kona, HI 96740.

 

Observatories from Maunakea and Haleakala will be represented, as well as other technology, education, and cultural organizations. Highlights includeStarlab--a portable planetarium provided by the Canada France Hawaii and Gemini observatories, solar viewing with experienced astronomers, robotic demos, educational games and toys, and many hands-on activities. Colorful and informative material will be available as well as displays from diverse organizations and a live broadcast by KWXX Radio.

 

“We are very excited to bring this fun and educational event for keiki and families to Kona,” said Nancy Sakamoto, General Manager of Kona Commons, “Kona Commons is proud to host the scientists and educators that are volunteering their time for this wonderful program.”

The community is invited to join the celebration, as Laulima Food Patch becomes the first restaurant in West Hawai‘i to become a Blue Zones Project ApprovedRestaurant.


 Laulima Food Patch was created to offer food from scratch, using as much local produce and natural ingredients as much as possible to promote healthier lifestyles. The menu is designed to promote balance and controlled portions to weigh heavy on vegetables and less on meat. Laulima’s menu and vision aligns with everything the Blue Zones Project stands for, a focus on educating the community for healthier lifestyle choices.

We will have a bouncer for the Keiki, live music during the day including the County Band and Green Machine and participating organizations include HELCO, Kohala Education, AdvoCATS, and Kuleana Education.  Although the event is scheduled from 10:00 - 5:00, participants can participate for as many hours that fit their schedule. 

 

Our goal of the Small Business Saturday Event  is to introduce organizations, like yours, to our community.  Your invitation comes at no charge and you may participate for as many hours that fits your schedule. You may set up a booth, hand out literature, or do whatever works best for your organization to introduce, or re-introduce yourself, to the community.
